What is UPS battery?

Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) is a device used to provide backup power when the main power supply is interrupted. One of its key components is the UPS battery.

What is the use of UPS?

UPS battery

UPS batteries, based on Nickel-Cadmium, lead-acid or lithium-ion battery technology, ensure a stable power supply during outages to prevent data loss or damage and maintain proper equipment operation.

By safeguarding devices against power issues, UPS batteries enhance data security, work efficiency, production continuity, service reliability, and emergency response. With their high reliability, long duration, powerful automation features, environmental friendliness, and cost-effectiveness advantages; UPS systems are an ideal choice for protecting critical equipment such as data centers, servers, network devices and other systems with demanding requirements for stable power supply.

Which battery should be used with UPS?

Lithium-ion batteries are generally better suited for solar UPS battery than lead-acid batteries and Nickel - Cadmium batteries in terms of energy density, lifespan, number of cycles, and charging speed.

UPS lithium ion batteries, as backup power sources, store and release energy by moving lithium ions from the positive electrode (cathode) to the negative electrode (anode) through an electrochemical process and then moving them back during discharge. This cyclic charging and discharging process enables UPS systems to provide power when the main power supply is interrupted, ensuring that connected devices do not stop operating due to a power outage

How does a UPS battery backup work?

Working Principles of UPS Li ion Battery

Charging Process

When the UPS system is connected to the main power supply, current flows through the charger to the battery, moving lithium ions from the negative electrode to the positive electrode, which is the charging process of the battery. During this process, the battery will store energy.

Discharge Process

When the main power supply is interrupted, the UPS system switches to battery-powered mode. In this case, the battery begins to release the energy it has stored. At this point, lithium ions begin to move from the positive electrode to the negative electrode through the circuit connected to the UPS system, providing power to the connected devices.

Recharge

Once the main power supply is restored, the UPS system will switch back to the main power supply mode, and the charger will resume transferring current to the battery to move lithium ions from the negative electrode to the positive electrode and recharge the battery.

UPS Battery Type

Depending on the size and design of the UPS system, the battery capacity and scale of the UPS batteries vary, with a range of options available for different types and specifications of batteries for small home UPS systems to large data center UPS systems.
