What Hinders Solid State Battery Development?

Solid state batteries utilize a solid electrolyte instead of the liquid electrolyte found in traditional lithium-ion batteries. Conventional liquid lithium batteries consist of four essential components: the positive electrode, the negative electrode, the electrolyte, and the separator. In contrast, solid-state batteries use a solid electrolyte instead of the conventional liquid counterpart.

Given the great potential of this solid state battery technology, why hasn't it been introduced to the market yet? Because the transition from laboratory to commercialization faces two challenges: technical feasibility and economic viability.

  • 1. Technical Feasibility: The core of a solid-state battery is to replace the liquid electrolyte with a solid electrolyte. However, maintaining stability at the interface between the solid electrolyte and the electrode material presents a significant challenge. Insufficient contact can lead to increased resistance, thus reducing battery performance. In addition, solid electrolytes suffer from lower ionic conductivity and slower lithium ion mobility, leading to slower charging and discharging speeds. 
  • Moreover, the manufacturing process is more complex. For example, sulfide solid electrolytes must be produced under inert gas protection to prevent moisture reactions in the air that generate toxic gases. This high-cost and technically challenging process is currently hindering the feasibility of mass production. Furthermore, laboratory test conditions often differ significantly from real-world environments, causing many technologies unable to achieve the expected results.
  • 2. Economic Viability: The all solid state battery cost is several times more than traditional liquid lithium batteries and the path to commercialization is fraught with difficulties. Although it has higher safety in theory, in practice, the solid electrolyte may break down at high temperatures, resulting in reduced battery performance or even failure.

  • Additionally, dendrites may form during charging and discharging process, piercing the separator, causing short circuits, and even explosions, making safety and reliability a significant issue. Furthermore, when the small-scale manufacturing process is scaled up for industrial production, costs will skyrocket.

When Will Solid State Batteries Arrive?

Solid-state batteries are expected to find primary applications in high-end consumer electronics, small-scale electric vehicles (EVs), and industries with stringent performance and safety requirements, such as aerospace. However, the solid-state batteries currently available on the market are still in the early stages of concept marketing.

Prominent automobile companies and lithium battery manufacturers like SAIC Motor, GAC-Toyota, BMW, CATL, BYD, and EVE are actively developing solid-state batteries. Nevertheless, based on their latest production schedules, it is unlikely that full-scale mass production of solid-state batteries will commence before 2026-2027 at the earliest. Even Toyota has had to revise its timeline multiple times and now plans to begin mass production in 2030. 

It is important to note that the availability timeline for solid-state batteries may vary due to various factors such as technological challenges and regulatory approval.

Key Considerations for Consumers

While closely monitoring advancements in the solid state lithium battery field, it is crucial for consumers to remain vigilant and not be swayed by superficially dazzling information. Although genuine innovation and technological breakthroughs are worth anticipating, they require time for verification. Let us hope that as technology advances and the market matures, more secure and affordable new energy solutions will emerge in the future.
