Solar storage systems use batteries to store the electricity generated by solar PV systems, enabling households and small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to achieve self-sufficiency during periods of high energy demand. The primary objective of this system is to enhance energy independence, reduce electricity expenses, and support the advancement of renewable energy, particularly in light of the increasing global demand for sustainable power. Kosovo is actively promoting the PV system installation and striving towards sustainable development and a cleaner future, demonstrating its strong commitment to environmental protection and energy transition.
In line with this, earlier this year, the Kosovo government launched a subsidy program for solar power storage systems targeting households and SMEs, aiming to encourage increased investment in solar energy solutions by residents and businesses.
The subsidy program is divided into 2 stages. The 1st stage, which started in February and ended in September, aims to provide financial support for the PV system installation.
- • Specifically, for installations ranging from 3kWp to 9kWp, the subsidy amount is €250/kWp, with a maximum limit of €2,000.
- • For installations of 10kWp or more, the subsidy amount is €200/kWp, up to a maximum of €6,000.
This policy not only alleviates the initial investment burden for users but also encourages more households and enterprises to adopt clean energy.
According to data from the Kosovo Economy Ministry, the 1st phase of the subsidy program has yielded significant results. A total of 445 applications have been received for the household consumer subsidy program, and so far, 29 beneficiaries have been announced, receiving a combined subsidy amount of €45,750 ($50,000). This indicates an increasing number of families are willing to embrace solar technology in order to reduce their reliance on traditional energy sources.
It is worth mentioning that the Economy Ministry is currently verifying the remaining applications, and more families are expected to receive support in the future.
In the SME sector, there were 67 applications received for the funding program with 8 beneficiaries currently receiving a total of €44,200 in funding. While participation from SMEs was relatively low, there is huge potential in this area and future policies may further incentivize more businesses to join the solar sector.
It should be noted that only applicants from the 1st round are eligible to participate in the 2nd phase of the subsidy program which will remain open until end-November.
This limitation aims to ensure rational resource allocation and encourage continued participation from those who have already applied thus fostering a positive cycle in the solar energy sector. By providing subsidies for solar power systems with battery storage in households and SMEs, Kosovo not only promotes widespread adoption of solar energy generation but also takes an important step towards supporting renewable energy integration.
Furthermore, the program's impact on reducing solar installation costs and shortening the payback period should not be overlooked. The promotion of solar backup systems enables households and businesses to manage their energy usage more flexibly, thereby potentially reducing costs during peak electricity pricing periods through the utilization of stored power.
