BESS battery storage is emerging in Chile. Battery Energy Storage System BESS is a technology used to store energy and release it when needed. BESS battery energy storage system typically uses batteries for energy storage, which can release energy to the power grid or electrical devices when needed. BESS battery energy storage can be used to balance the load on the grid, improve the reliability of the power system, regulate the frequency and battery storage voltage, etc.
Three different developers have recently announced large battery energy storage systems BESS projects to accompany solar power plants in Chile.
- Project 1:
The Chilean subsidiary of Italian energy company Enel, Enel Chile, has announced plans to install a large battery storage with a rated capacity of 67 MW/134 MWh at the El Manzano solar power plant. The project is located in the town of Tiltil in the Santiago Metropolitan Region, with a total installed capacity of 99 MW. The solar power plant covers 185 hectares and uses 162,000 double-sided monocrystalline silicon solar panels of 615 W and 610 W.
- Project 2:
Portuguese EPC contractor CJR Renewable has announced that it has signed an agreement with Irish company Atlas Renewable to build a 200 MW/800 MWh BESS battery energy storage system.
The solar energy battery storage is expected to start operating in 2022 and will be paired with the 244 MW Sol del Desierto solar power plant located in the town of Maria Elena in the Antofagasta region of Chile.
Note: Sol del Desierto is located on 479 hectares of land and has 582,930 solar panels, generating approximately 71.4 billion kWh of electricity per year. The solar power plant has already signed a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Atlas Renewable Energy and Engie's Chilean subsidiary, Engie Energia Chile, to provide 5.5 billion kWh of electricity per year.
- Project 3:
Spanish developer Uriel Renovables has announced that their Quinquimo solar power plant and 90MW/200MWh BESS facility have received preliminary approval for another development project.
The project is planned to start construction in the Valparaíso Region, 150 kilometers north of Santiago, Chile, in 2025.
The introduction of large-scale solar storage battery systems in Chile brings multiple benefits, including the integration of renewable energy, improved energy efficiency, enhanced grid stability and reliability, flexible response and rapid regulation, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, and affordability. Large scale battery storage is a beneficial trend for Chile and other countries, as it helps drive the clean energy transition, enhance the sustainability and adaptability of energy systems.
